A Preston-based businessman has won an accolade in the annual British Franchising Association’s Franchisor of the Year Awards Ken Deary, of care provider Right at Home, won the “Emerging Franchisor” category.
Former qualified accountant Ken was introduced to franchising in 1994 when, after a successful career with an FTSE top 30 insurance company, he made a bold move to become his own boss.
After completing nine months unpaid training, he opened his first McDonald’s restaurant in Southport. Over the next 12 years, Ken built a £6 million plus business over four locations.
His success was recognized in 2001, winning the British Franchise Association Franchisee of the Year award. Around this time he also began running a residential care home in East Lancashire, gaining experience of the care sector that would later prove invaluable.
Ken had become increasingly aware of the lack of personalized home care services available to older people as he struggled to find reliable support for a close family member.
He looked to America, where Right at Home, already established in the US, were looking to introduce their model overseas.
Ken bought the UK Master Licence in early 2010. Right at Home’s first franchised office opened in Sutton in September 2011 and the UK team will open its 30th UK office early in 2015.
Ken said: “Exceptional franchise support and a tight-knit network of dedicated owners are the key to Right at Home’s aspiration to be leaders in the UK home care market. The BFA award is a welcome acknowledgement of the hard work that has been put in over the past three years, building a great franchise system that is now starting to yield very exciting results.”
